Individual DBT Sessions
Individual DBT sessions focus on applying the DBT skills to your unique life circumstances. In these sessions you and your therapist will identify appropriate “targets” – behaviors, thoughts and feelings that you would like to increase or decrease – and work with you to achieve meaningful change. DBT treatment is heavily influenced by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) but has an added emphasis on Validation, i.e., accepting uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and behaviors rather than fighting against them. The therapist’s role during these sessions is to help you find a balance between acceptance and change. One of DBT’s unique and most valuable features is coaching: in between sessions you can access your therapist to enhance the process of learning to use skills in your day-to-day life. Coaching involves brief phone calls to discuss problematic situations and reinforce the use of specific skills in handling these circumstances.
A DBT therapist will also help you develop new skills which will enable you to improve unhealthy thoughts and behaviors, as well as develop and improve your preexisting coping strategies. To this end, it is recommended that those in individual DBT also participate in the DBT Skills Group.
The new skills your therapist will help you develop include:
- Emotion regulation
- Mindfulness practices
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Distress Tolerance
